The global space industry is witnessing an unprecedented era of innovation and collaboration, with nations increasingly recognizing the strategic importance of space technologies. Amidst this burgeoning landscape, SPEXA 2026 (Space Business Expo), held at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan, emerged as a pivotal platform for fostering international partnerships and showcasing advancements in space business. This year, a significant narrative unfolded around the enhanced inclusiveness of African stakeholders, largely spearheaded by the visionary efforts of Dr. Benjamin Bonsu, Founder of the Japan Africa Space Business Network (JASBN).
The collaboration highlighted at SPEXA 2026 is set against a backdrop of rapid growth in both the Japanese and African space sectors. Recent industry reports underscore the immense economic potential and strategic value of these markets.
The African Space Industry: A $25 Billion Frontier
The African space economy has shown remarkable resilience and growth. According to the 2025 African Space Industry Report, the continent’s space economy reached a valuation of USD 24.95 billion in 2024. This momentum is projected to continue, with the market expected to expand to USD 39.52 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by increased government investment, which reached approximately USD 828.37 million for 2026, and a burgeoning ecosystem of young professionals and startups focused on solving local challenges through space technology.
Japan continues to be a global leader in space technology, with a market characterized by high-tech innovation and strong government support. The Japan Space Launch Services Market was valued at approximately USD 962.28 million in 2024 and is projected to more than double, reaching USD 2,266.77 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 15.35%. Key drivers include the expansion of satellite communication and navigation systems, such as the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), and a significant shift toward sustainable, reusable launch vehicles. The Japanese government has further bolstered this growth by establishing the Space Strategy Fund, with a planned allocation of approximately USD 6.6 billion over the next decade.
Dr. Benjamin Bonsu, a distinguished space engineer with over a decade of experience in the Japanese space industry, has been a fervent advocate for bridging the space sectors of Japan and Africa. His dedication culminated in the establishment of the Japan Africa Space Business Network (JASBN), an initiative aimed at promoting private space activities and fostering commercial space ventures between the two regions. Dr. Bonsu’s expertise as a satellite developer, coupled with his deep understanding of both Japanese technological prowess and African developmental needs, positions him as a crucial figure in this cross-continental collaboration.
Among his notable achievements, Dr. Bonsu pioneered the BIRDS CubeSat Program, which has opened doors for numerous African and Asian countries to launch their first national satellites into space. He also led the groundbreaking Ghanasat-1 project, marking a significant milestone for Ghana’s entry into the space age. In recognition of his immense contributions to emerging space activities in Africa, Japan, and the global space ecosystem, Dr. Bonsu was awarded the prestigious World Space and Society Award by the International Astronautical Federation.
During SPEXA 2026, Dr. Bonsu, in partnership with the JafriQ Radio team led by CEO Nana Yaw Pop, actively participated in the opening events. JafriQ Radio, known for its efforts to empower African people in Japan and promote African initiatives, provided a vital media platform for amplifying the discussions around Africa’s role in space.
Dr. Bonsu’s engagement at SPEXA included a significant interview with JafriQ Radio, where he articulated his vision for greater African involvement. Furthermore, he held a successful meeting with the organizers of SPEXA, including Mr. Akira Kono, Executive Specialist (International Sales) of RX Japan, emphasizing the critical need for collaboration between SPEXA, JafriQ Radio, and JASBN. His proposal centered on creating dedicated platforms for African stakeholders, diplomats, and space sector representatives to actively participate in the exhibition and engage in top-level panel discussions concerning global space activities and the advancement of existing Japan-Africa relationships.
Beyond high-level discussions, Dr. Bonsu also took the JafriQ Radio team on a tour of various exhibition booths. With his background as a satellite developer, he provided insightful explanations on the operation of satellites in space and the fundamental principles of satellite technology, making complex concepts accessible to a broader audience.
Dr. Bonsu’s passion for Japan-Africa space activities is rooted in the tangible benefits that space data can bring to the African continent. In his interview with JafriQ Radio, he highlighted the diverse applications of space data, which are crucial for addressing some of Africa’s most pressing challenges:
These applications underscore the immense potential of space technology to drive socio-economic development and improve the quality of life for millions in Africa.
Dr. Benjamin Bonsu’s tireless efforts at SPEXA 2026 exemplify a growing movement towards a more inclusive and globally integrated space industry. By advocating for stronger ties between Japan and Africa, and by illuminating the practical benefits of space data, he is paving the way for a future where African nations are not just consumers but active contributors and innovators in the final frontier. The collaboration between JASBN, JafriQ Radio, and SPEXA holds the promise of unlocking new opportunities and fostering a sustainable space ecosystem that benefits both regions.
