The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, held a meeting with the top executives of the Ghana Residents Association of Japan on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Okura Hotel in Tokyo, Japan.
President Mahama has been on a working visit to Japan since August 18, 2025, and participated in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) which was at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama, Japan on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Before the meeting commenced, a leading member of the association gave a brief history of the association before proceeding to apprise the President of the mission and activities of the association.
After engaging with Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, UN General Secretary António Guterres and other top personalities in the East Asian country to advance Ghana–Japan cooperation in three key areas, such as Cocoa and value addition, strategic infrastructure and people-to-people ties, the President took time to meet up with the top brass of the Ghanaian association which was launched earlier this year.
During his interaction with the leadership of the association, President Mahama pledged his support to the group and hinted that he could meet the larger Ghanaian community in 2027 when he attends the centenary anniversary of the famous Japanese microbiologist Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, who passed away in May 1928 after suffering from yellow fever in Accra.
Meanwhile, during his meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, the two leaders concurred to further enhance the bilateral relationship towards 2027, marking the 100th anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s voyage, the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the 50th anniversary of the dispatch of JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.
