Exports of cars from Japan to Ghana have been suspended with immediate effect. On Sunday, 4 October 2026, JafriQ Radio presenters go live on Facebook to ask what happens next.

A sudden stop at the port

For exporters, dealers and buyers on both sides of the Japan–Ghana trade route, the news landed fast. The Japan Ghana Exporters Association (JGEA) has announced a suspension on the exportation of cars to Ghana, effective immediately from 2 October 2026.

The Association addressed its notice to all its members and to the general public, and asked everyone involved to cooperate fully while the matter is being worked out.

Why the Association has acted

According to the JGEA notice, the decision comes down to three issues:

  • Challenges with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme.
  • The requirement for inspection and certification by Omanbapa Auto & PVoC Ltd and Autoterminal Japan Ltd.
  • The need for clarification and resolution with the Ghana Embassy and Omanbapa on the current issues.

The Association says the suspension will stay in place until it has met with the Ghana Embassy and Omanbapa to address these challenges and get the necessary clarifications.

Why this matters to you

Japan is a major source of vehicles for Ghanaian buyers, and the export chain that serves them involves many people: exporters, dealers, inspectors, shippers, clearing agents and, at the end of the line, the families and businesses waiting for their cars. When shipments stop, questions follow quickly. What happens to vehicles already purchased? What will the new inspection and certification requirements involve? How long could this take?

Those are the questions many people in the trade are asking right now, and they deserve open, careful discussion.
