Ghanaian baseball wunderkind Jayden Afful wins major silverware in Kanagawa schools competition

Ghanaian-Filipino baseball sensation Jeorge Jayden Afful has made a remarkable impact after excelling with Sagamihara Little Senior High School at the 2025 Summer Kanagawa Prefecture Schools Baseball Competition.

Afful, 14, was a key member of his school’s squad throughout the competition which drew 44 schools across the Kanagawa region.

In his role as a center fielder, Afful displayed gallantry performances as his team reached the finals of the competition. However, they fell short as they succumbed to defeat against Asamizodai Junior High School – leaving them to finish with silver medals in second place.

For his outstanding display and extraordinary show of talent, Afful has been offered a scholarship which will now usher him into senior high school where he can further chase his dreams of playing in Japan’s prestigious spring and summer Kohisen Baseball Tournament.

He was born to a Ghanaian father and a Filipino mother and is regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in Japan’s feeder baseball system.

Baseball is the most popular sport in Japan by participation and viewership.
