Ghana’s Black Queens emerged from their ruins to post a 4-1 win over Tanzania to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations at the Stade Municipal de Berkana in Morocco.
This becomes the 9th time the West African powerhouse has secured a place in the knockout phase of the competition which has experienced 16 editions. However, it is the first time the Queens have reached the quarter-finals in 9 years.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s ladies needed the win to stand any chance of progress to the next stage of the competition after failing to win against South Africa and Mali in their previous fixtures in Group C.
Turkey-based Princella Adubea hit the opener for the 3-time silver medallists on the 12th minute mark. However, 27-year-old Stumai Athumani pecked the scoring for the East Africans 4 minutes before the interval.
Ghana restored their lead on the 63rd minute when Alice Kusi converted a penalty for the Queens.
Substitute Evelyn Badu netted a comfort goal for Ghana 11 minutes after replacing Adubea with London City Lionessess forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah providing the assist.
The 29-year-old put her name on the score-sheet on the struck of full-time as she grabbed the 4th goal for Ghana.
Ghana joins Morocco, Zambia, Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, Mali, and Senegal who have all qualified to the quarter-finals of the competition.
