Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has pledged to the Japanese people that his administration will introduce much stricter immigration policies if his political party wins the July 20 the national Upper House elections.

In his latest address at the Japan National Press Club, he stated that some people with ‘certain history’ will not be allowed into the country.

According to the President, his government wants to take more responsibility for deciding who to let into the country and that it will not tolerate illegal immigration.

He was speaking at the Japan National Press Club (JNPC) last Wednesday as the eight political party leaders intensify their campaigns ahead of the elections.

The problems created by the increasing number of foreign nationals in Japan has taken the centre stage in the upcoming elections with political parties offering different solutions in their campaign promises.

A record number of foreigners have entered Japan to either visit or invest in the country while others are in the country basically to look for work and relocate.

“We will determine who they are, and those with certain past records will not be allowed to enter Japan … and this is the first priority,” Ishiba has been quoted by The Japan Times online portal.

The president has pledged to introduce a system in which the backgrounds of individuals are properly verified before they arrive in Japan.

A record number of Chinese and other foreign nationals are acquiring properties in Japan while Africans and other West Asian citizens continue to arrive in the country.
