Nigerian international striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following a serious injury suffered a Premier League game over the weekend.
The 27-year-old has undergone the first phase of surgery for the abdominal injury he suffered during the weekend’s Premier League clash against Leicester City.
The Illorin-born former Union Berlin forward nicknamed ‘Iron Man’ collided with the post in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw against relegated Leicester at the City Ground on Sunday as he attempted to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga.
Awoniyi received treatment on the pitch and was able to continue the game under worrying circumstances and had to be rushed to hospital on Sunday night.
He had surgery on Monday morning and a statement from Forest on Tuesday morning said ‘Awoniyi’ has been recovering well in hospital.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis took to the field after the game to express his concern to manager Nuno Espirito Santo over how Awoniyi’s injury was handled.
