A murder case witness, identified as Ashwin Mouwers, was shot dead while waiting to testify in an ongoing murder trial.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the local police spokesperson, has confirmed that Mouwers was shot dead while he was about to testify as a witness in a 2021 murder case that took place in Eldorado Park, Soweto.

The national police service in South Africa have launched a search for the two suspects who committed the fresh murder.

Security has been one of the major concerns for South Africans. South Africa’s murder rate has been increasing over the past decade, reaching a high of 45 murders per 100,000 people in 2022–2023.
