Ghana has suddenly been gripped with a new frenzy of breaking and setting Guinness World Records with no end in sight just yet.

In December last year, the whole country was caught up in this frenzy when an event organizer and broadcaster, Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum took up the challenge to break the record for signing for the longest hours.

Afua did sing for for almost 127 hours and now awaits the Guinness World Record team to validate her attempt and confirm whether she did break the record held by an Indian since 2012.

The country hasn’t finished celebrating that attempt when another Ghanaian woman, this time round a chef decided to embark on her own attempt in cooking.

Chef Failatu Abdul-Razak has been cooking since January 1st in her attempt to break the Guinness world record for the longest hours cooking.

She has now cooked for more than 150 hours at her base located in a hotel in the northern city of Tamale.

Failatu Abdul-Razak wanted to break the Guinness World Record for a cook-a-thon of 119 hours and 57 minutes held by Irish chef Alan Fisher.

Setting sight on the record

But after learning that there are other persons attempting to break same record, she has set her sight on cooking for 240 hours. She wants to end the cooking event on January 10.

Abdul-Razak believes her attempt is like a “national assignment” for her country and its people.

She said before the cooking started that “If I fail, believe me, I have put our president, Ghanaians, people who have supported (and) groomed me, my family and friends to shame.”

Celebrities, politicians and ordinary people have been flocking to the hotel in Tamale to watch the chef cook, enjoy the food and cheer her on.

An association of chefs in Ghana has conferred an executive position on her already to recognize her efforts.

“The Ghana Chefs Association wishes to congratulate and recognize your official attempt to break the World Guinness Record for cook-a-thon (the longest cooking marathon)…..We confer to you the title ‘Executive Chef’, which is the highest rank in our profession. You are now an Executive Chef, Failatu Abdul Razak” a Ghana Chefs Association citation read.

Failatu Abdul-Razak has expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the ongoing support.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone for your continued support! Your encouragement has been the driving force behind incredible journey,” she said in a post on Facebook on Saturday.

Record attempt frenzy

Since last year the entire West Africa has been gripped in this frenzy of world record attempts.

There are already several Ghanaians planning to embark on their own world record attempts in the coming weeks, a signal 2024 could be a year of more record attempts.

Some applicants have already started advertising their attempts in make-up, speeches among others.

Since July 2023, there have been some 355 applications from individuals in Ghana alone showing their interest to attempt several records in different categories.

A spokesperson from the Guinness World Record Alina Polianskaya told local TV channel, JoyNews that the craze is amazing.

“It has been amazing to see the enthusiasm for record-breaking in the past year and we look forward to seeing even more success to come,” she said.
