Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes suffered a massive jolt Tuesday after failing to overpower Zimbabwe in a Group C clash in Uyo.

The Super Eagles entered the clash having overcome Rwanda on Saturday and were hoping to secure victory over the Warriors to brighten their qualification chances. The 1-1 stalemate in Akwa Ibom State has left the hopes of Eric Chelle’s side slightly jeopardised. The Nigerian strike force that featured Alex Iwobi, Simon Moses, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, and Samuel Chukwueze failed to carve Zimbabwe open until Ola Aina assisted Victor Osimhen to register the opening goal on the 74th minute mark.

However, Huddersfield Town’s Tawanda Chirewa scored a 90th minute equaliser to silence the entire Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The result leaves Nigeria in 4th place with South Africa leading the group with 13 points with Rwanda sitting second with 8 points followed by Benin.

Meanwhile, South Africa managed a 2-0 away win over Benin.

Elsewhere in Group D, Cape Verde left Angola shell-shocked after defeating the Palancas Negras 2-1 Luanda. Cameroon did themselves well to a 3-1 triumph over Libya. Vincent Aboubakar scored a brace with Bryan Mbeumo scoring the other goal.

Uganda pipped Guinea 1-0 to move to 9 points.

Burundi dismantle Seychelles 5-0 to pile the pressure on second-placed Gabon in Group F.

Egypt recorded their 5th win of the campaign after managing a slim win over Sierra Leone in Cairo. Zamalek’s Zizo scored the solitary goal of the game for the Pharaohs.

Sudan surrendered their leadership of Group B after sharing the spoils with South Sudan in Benghazi. DR Congo’s 2-0 win over Mauritania has propelled them to the summit of the Group with 13 points while Senegal have overtaken Sudan to stay with second place with 12 points – same as Sudan after beating Togo 2-0.

Algeria made a meal of Mozambique after hammering them 5-1 Tizi Ouzou.

Comoros managed a slim 1-0 victory over Chad to stay in pole position of grabbing a spot from Group I.

Morocco laboured to a 2-0 win over Tanzania at the Honneur Stadium Oujda with Real Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz scoring from the spot.
