A football supporter in Ghana has been stabbed to death after crowd violence ensued during a league game on Sunday.

The fan, who is identified as Francis Yaw Frimpong popularly known as Nana Pooley, was stabbed  at the Professor Nana Okromansa Park in Nsoatre during a Premier League game between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman.

Crowd violence has been a major issue in Ghana football in recent years with a series of incidents being recorded at various match centers.

The game ended 1-0 in favour of Nsoatreman who has hugely under-performed this season.

Former Asante Kotoko General Manager Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi confirmed the incident and wrote on his Facebook page.

“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the tragic passing of Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, a devoted supporter of Asante Kotoko SC. Reports indicate that he was fatally stabbed by unknown assailants at Nsoatre during the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

This senseless act of violence has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, and my heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, children, and extended family. I also extend my sympathies to the Asante Kotoko SC community, who have lost a passionate and loyal supporter.
It is crucial that we, as a society, stand firm against any form of violence, especially within the realm of sports. The sanctity and integrity of the game must always be upheld, and such incidents must be unequivocally condemned.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
Rest well, my dear friend. You will be greatly missed.”
