Uganda has become the fourth African nation to join the BRICS after the East African nation became a BRICS Partner state member, joining 8 other nations to become members on 2025 New Year day.
Uganda joins fellow African countries South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia who are all already members of the organisation which was birthed in September 2006 in New York.
The announcement was made at the organisation’s latest summit in Kazan – Kazakhstan where Belarus, Indonesia, Thailand, Bolivia, Cuba, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan were all announced as new members of the group which has been set up to rival the Western system of controlling the world’s resources.
The Partner State status, introduced to foster deeper collaboration, enables these nations to actively engage with BRICS initiatives and contribute to its broader objectives.
BRICS is an interstate association comprised of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of South Africa.
On 1 January 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joined BRICS.
