Africa: Brics Summit 2024 – Everything, Everywhere, All At Once?

[ad_1] Ushering in a multipolar order requires a streamlined and coherent political agenda - not unfocused expansion. The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, concluded last week with the usual grand declaration of the group's commitments, concerns and aspirations. Many media headlines, particularly in Western countries, focused on how the summit and BRICS generally, symbolised Moscow's ability to circumvent the fallout of sanctions by turning to the global south. In this way, BRICS is indirectly viewed as a threat to […]

Africa: BRICS+ Could Shape a New World Order, but It Lacks Shared Values and a Unified Identity

[ad_1] The last two summits of Brics countries have raised questions about the coalition's identity and purpose. This began to come into focus at the summit hosted by South Africa in 2023, and more acutely at the recent 2024 summit in Kazan, Russia. At both events the alliance undertook to expand its membership. In 2023, the first five Brics members - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - invited Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates […]

Africa: Cementing US-Angola Ties – the Significance of Biden’s Visit

[ad_1] Although there are benefits for both countries, the US is clearly challenging the dominance of China and Russia in Southern Africa. With just a few months left in his presidency, United States (US) President Joe Biden chose to visit Angola from 13-15 October. The trip was postponed after Hurricane Milton struck Florida's west coast this week, and a new date hasn't been set. This would have been Biden's only visit to Africa during his presidency, the first by a […]
