European giants Real Madrid have confirmed the sacking of manager Xabi Alonso after the club’s recent loss to sworn rivals Barcelona in the final of the Supercopa de Espana on Sunday.
In a brief statement released on the club’s website, the La Liga record winners have stated that the two parties mutually parted ways.
“We would like to thank Xabi Alonso and all his coaching staff for their hard work and dedication throughout this time, and wish them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives,” the statement reads.
The former Bayer Leverkusen manager and ex-Liverpool and Bayern Munich player took charge at the Santiago Bernabeu after replacing Carlo Ancelotti who left his role to take charge of Brazil.
A series of controversial decisions and a breakdown of the relationship between himself and the club’s top stars especially Vinicius Jr. led to patchy form during his tenure at the helm.
