Michael Essien, who is 42-years-old, made 59 appearances for Ghana’s Black Stars and scored 9 goals in the process, representing the West African nation at three different FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Essien, since his retirement from active football, has taken a route in football by earning coaching badges and working for several years at the Right To Dream Academy group of clubs with his mainstay being with Danish side Nordsjaelland as one of the assistant trainers.

Though the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder is yet to take a leading role in coaching since acquiring his coaching badges, he has revealed during a recent interview that he was approached by the Ghana Football Association to take the role of an assistant coach with the Black Stars.

“I was approached to become the assistant coach of the Black Stars. I spoke with Otto Addo and President Kurt Okraku, but I felt I wasn’t ready,” he told Accra-based Sporty FM.

The former Liberty Professionals midfielder had spells with French giants Olympique Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.

Essien retired from active soccer in 2020 after having a one-and-a-half year spell with Azerbaijan Premier League Sabail FK.
