About 65 percent of Japanese companies have resolved to hiring foreign workers to cover for the labour shortages in the country, an official government survey has revealed.
Respondent companies said foreign workers are employed with the expectation that they will perform as well or better than Japanese staff. Around 18.5 percent cited efforts to promote diversity, the labor ministry survey said.
In the midst of Japan’s graying and declining population, the ministry conducted the survey on the employment and recruitment of foreign workers as the number of foreign workers in the country continue to grow.
During the survey, 44.8 percent of the companies reported communication challenges with foreign workers.
Meanwhile, the survey further established that 51.5 percent of foreign workers in Japan were introduced to their jobs by agencies or individuals in their home countries.
