Guinea: Military leader Doumbouya promoted to rank of General

Guinea’s military leader, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has been promoted to the rank of a general in the army.

The presidency said he initially declined the promotion but later accepted the position.

Doumbouya hosted all Guinea’s military units including more than 450 members of the Defence and Security Forces on Tuesday.

Now 43, he seized power in September 2021 has been the man at the helm of affairs after being sworn in as the interim president.

Mamady Doumbouya led a coup to overthrow President Alpha Condé who was just starting his controversial third term in office.

Conde had selected Doumbouya to lead the country’s special forces group, which was supposed to protect the head of state from coups.

He is one of the continent’s youngest leaders. The military leader has already promised to handover power to a democratically elected president.

Following the latest elevation, Doumbouya announced that he was stepping down as commander of the special forces group. He is to be replaced by his deputy.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya is a former legionnaire of the French army.
