Ugandans travelling to India will going forward be required to present valid Yellow Fever Certificates before entering the country, the Ministry of Internal has announced.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Internal Affairs spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi said India has implemented strict yellow fever vaccine entry requirements for travelers aged 9 months and above from any of the 42 yellow fever endemic countries, including Uganda.

“This means that travelers from Uganda to India must have a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate issued by an authorized Yellow Fever vaccination center. Failure to provide this certificate will result in a quarantine period of up to six days at designated facilities in India,” Mundeyi said.

He explained that the Yellow Fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, noting that travelers must be vaccinated at least 10 days before their departure for India.

Yellow Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease with the high mortality rate of 40 to 60 per cent transmitted by infected mosquitoes prevailing in tropical areas of South America and Africa.

Authorities in India said the disease is neither endemic to India nor have established transmission of the disease but noted there is significant risk of importation.

All the countries whose nationals are required to present a valid Yellow Fever certificate before entry to India are either from Africa or South America.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs in Uganda urged citizens to heed to this travel advisory.

“To avoid the inconvenience of quarantine, we strongly advise all Ugandan travelers to India to strictly adhere to these measures,” Mundeyi said.
